Key takeaways
- SMS is plain text through the carrier, 160 characters per segment; RCS adds high-resolution media, read receipts and, for brands, a verified name, rich cards and buttons.
- RCS needs a supporting phone, app and carrier: on iPhone, Apple asks for iOS 18 and a carrier that supports RCS. SMS works on any mobile phone with a text plan.
- When a phone cannot receive RCS, Google's platform returns an error and the brand sends its fallback, usually an SMS.
- On Twilio's US price list, read October 19, 2026, an RCS text segment and an SMS segment both cost $0.0083 before carrier fees; RCS rich media is $0.022 per message.
RCS vs SMS comes down to one trade-off. SMS is the plain text message every mobile phone can receive: words and a link, 160 characters at a time. RCS is the newer standard behind the phone's own messaging app: it adds high-resolution media, read receipts and, for brands, a verified name, product cards and buttons, but only reaches phones, apps and carriers that support it.
This page sets the two side by side from the sources that run them: Apple's and Google's support and developer pages for how each one behaves, Klaviyo's help center for SMS length rules and Twilio's US price list for costs, all read on October 19, 2026. Then it looks at what the choice means for an online store. For a wider view that adds MMS and WhatsApp, see our SMS vs MMS vs RCS vs WhatsApp comparison.

What SMS is, and where it stops
SMS (short message service) is the carrier's text message. Klaviyo's help center sums up its limits: an SMS holds up to 160 characters, or 70 when it contains an emoji or a special character. A longer text is split into segments, and since a hidden header of about 7 characters keeps them in order, each segment of a split SMS holds 153 characters. Each segment is billed. Our SMS vs MMS guide covers the picture message version.
Apple adds what SMS lacks: SMS and MMS messages are not end-to-end encrypted, and on iPhone they show in green bubbles. Their strength is reach: Apple only asks for "a text-messaging plan that supports these services".
What RCS adds
Apple's article on iMessage, RCS and SMS/MMS describes RCS from the user's side: texts, high-resolution photos and videos, links, delivery and read receipts and typing indicators, in green bubbles. Apple adds that RCS is a carrier-provided service and that, starting with iOS 26.5, end-to-end encrypted RCS is in beta with supported carriers.
In 1, RCS brings high-resolution media, receipts and typing indicators, in green bubbles like SMS; in 2, RCS on iPhone needs iOS 18 and a carrier that supports it.
For a business, the difference is larger. Google presents RCS for Business as a way to engage customers "on Android and iOS" with distinctive branding and rich media, read receipts and analytics, and a "Verified" icon. A brand message can carry:
- A rich card: media, a title of up to 200 characters, a description of up to 2,000 characters and up to four suggested replies or actions.
- A carousel of up to ten vertical rich cards, for several products in one message.
- Suggestion chips: up to 11 below a card.
In 1, a rich card title can be up to 200 characters long; in 2, each card holds up to four suggested replies and actions, plus up to 11 chips below.
None of this fits in an SMS. Our RCS messaging examples show eight of these formats applied to an online store.
Reach: who receives RCS, and what happens when they cannot
SMS reaches any mobile phone with a text plan. RCS needs three things to line up: a phone and app that support it, RCS turned on, and a carrier that supports it. On iPhone, Apple asks for iOS 18 and a text-messaging plan from a carrier that supports RCS, and keeps a list of carriers by country.
For a brand, Google's send messages guide spells out what happens at the edges:
- if the recipient's device does not support RCS or does not have it enabled, the platform returns a
404 NOT_FOUNDerror and you "can attempt to reach the user through the fallback methods defined in your infrastructure"; - if the recipient is on a network where your agent is not launched yet, the platform also returns
404 NOT_FOUND; - if the recipient is only offline, the message is held and delivery is retried for 30 days.
In 1, a phone without RCS returns a 404 NOT_FOUND error, and the sender reaches the user through its fallback.
In practice, RCS for a brand means RCS plus SMS: RCS where the customer can receive it, SMS where they cannot. The fallback is part of the setup, not an option.
Cost: RCS vs SMS per message in the US
Prices depend on the provider and the carrier. As one public reference, Twilio's US price list, marked "current as of October 2026" and read on October 19, 2026:
| Outbound message | Twilio price | Carrier fee AT&T | Carrier fee T-Mobile | Carrier fee Verizon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SMS on a long code, per segment | $0.0083 | $0.0035 | $0.0045 | $0.005 |
| RCS Rich (text), per segment | $0.0083 | $0.0045 | $0.0062 | $0.005 |
| RCS Rich Media, per message | $0.022 | $0.01 | $0.0125 | $0.007 |
Two points to read in this table: a text-only RCS message costs about the same as an SMS before carrier fees, and a rich media RCS message is billed per message rather than per segment. Google's documentation also calls an RCS message of up to 160 characters a "Basic Message", the format carriers use to bill traffic moving from SMS to RCS. Our RCS pricing guide and SMS marketing pricing guide go further.
Registration: what each channel asks of a brand
- SMS in the US goes through A2P 10DLC registration for 10-digit numbers (or toll-free verification, or a short code): your provider registers your brand and campaign with The Campaign Registry. See our 10DLC registration guide.
- RCS goes through a messaging partner registered with Google, brand verification, then launch approval carrier by carrier. Our RCS business messaging guide explains each step.
Both channels require the customer's consent before marketing messages; our SMS opt-in guide covers the US rules.
RCS vs SMS for an online store
Pick by message, not by channel:
| Message | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New collection, several products | RCS | A carousel shows each product with its photo and a button |
| Abandoned cart reminder | RCS, SMS fallback | The product card and a "Resume my cart" button; SMS keeps the link for phones without RCS |
| Shipping update | SMS or RCS | A short notice with a tracking link works in both |
| Flash sale ending tonight | SMS | One line and a link, readable on every phone |
| Review request | RCS | Suggested replies let the customer answer in one tap |
Three habits help either way: put your brand name at the start, keep one idea and one link per message, and measure orders per send rather than opens. Our SMS marketing examples give ready-to-adapt wording for each of these moments.
What it looks like with Kanal
Kanal sends SMS and RCS campaigns from one app connected to your Shopify store, to the same customer segments. See RCS marketing for Shopify for product cards and carousels, and Kanal's SMS marketing platform for campaigns and automated texts.
Two other channels sit in the same app, or soon will. iMessage with Kanal, coming soon, will let your store write first in Apple's Messages app, and WhatsApp marketing reaches the customers who live on WhatsApp, with images, buttons and replies.
What RCS vs SMS means on your own phone
If you landed here because your own phone now shows "RCS": it means your messaging app is using the RCS standard instead of SMS for that conversation, because both sides have it. On iPhone, RCS messages appear in green bubbles like SMS, and Apple lets you turn RCS on or off, and turn off RCS business messages, under Settings, Apps, Messages, RCS Messaging (Apple Support). When RCS is not available, the message goes as a regular SMS or MMS.
The short version
- SMS: plain text, 160 characters per segment, reaches every mobile phone with a text plan.
- RCS: verified brand name, rich cards, carousels and buttons, read receipts, but only where the phone and carrier support it.
- Brands send RCS with an SMS fallback, and pick the channel per message.
- On Twilio's US list, an RCS text segment and an SMS segment cost the same before carrier fees; rich media costs more.
