Key takeaways

  1. iMessage marketing means reaching iPhone customers in a blue bubble with cart reminders, order news, offers and replies.
  2. Blue bubbles are iMessage between Apple devices; green bubbles are RCS or SMS, which a brand can already send to iPhones today.
  3. US consent rules for marketing texts are the right baseline: opt-in first, brand name, STOP, quiet hours.
  4. iMessage is coming soon to Kanal: a store will send the first iMessage, such as an abandoned cart reminder, with the same automations as on WhatsApp.

iMessage marketing means reaching customers in the Messages app on their iPhone, in a blue bubble: a cart reminder, an order update, a launch, a reply to a question. iMessage for business has long meant Apple's customer service channel, run from a support console. iMessage is coming soon to Kanal: a Shopify store will instead send the first iMessage itself, an abandoned cart reminder for example, and run the same automations it runs on WhatsApp. This guide explains what reaches an iPhone today, the US consent rules to follow, message examples, and how to plan for your iPhone customers.

Facts about Apple come from Apple Support and Apple's Messages for Business documentation, and the US rules from the CTIA Messaging Principles and the FCC rule at 47 CFR 64.1200, all read on October 19, 2026.

Blue bubbles, green bubbles: what reaches an iPhone

Apple Support explains that the Messages app sends three kinds of messages:

TypeBubbleSent toNotes from Apple
iMessageBlueOther Apple devices, over Wi-Fi or cellular dataEnd-to-end encrypted
RCSGreenApple and non-Apple devicesNeeds iOS 18 and a supporting carrier; encryption depends on carriers
SMS/MMSGreenAny phoneA carrier service, not end-to-end encrypted

Apple Support page on iMessage, RCS and SMS/MMS, with the three message types (1) and the blue iMessage bubble (2) highlighted In 1, Messages sends iMessage, RCS or SMS/MMS; in 2, iMessage shows in a blue bubble.

A brand that sends SMS or RCS is already in the Messages app of its iPhone customers, in green. iMessage marketing is about the blue bubble: the same app, the format customers use with friends and family. For the consumer side, see what iMessage is and iMessage vs WhatsApp.

Treat marketing iMessages like marketing texts:

  • Opt-in first. The CTIA Messaging Principles and Best Practices say messages should be sent only after the consumer has opted in, with a clear call to action that names your brand and how to opt out.
  • STOP works. Under the FCC rule at 47 CFR 64.1200, replies such as stop, quit, end, revoke, opt out, cancel or unsubscribe revoke consent, to be honored within ten business days.
  • Quiet hours. The same rule bars telephone solicitations before 8 a.m. and after 9 p.m. at the recipient's local time; some states set narrower windows.
  • Your brand name first, so customers know who is writing.

Our guide to SMS opt-in and consent covers these rules in detail, including what records to keep.

Plan for iPhone and Android customers together

Not every customer can receive iMessage. Apple Support notes that iPhones on iOS 18 with a supporting carrier can receive RCS, and that "some businesses can send alerts and updates on your orders" through it.

Apple Support page on RCS for iPhone, with the iOS 18 and carrier requirement (1) and business order alerts by RCS (2) highlighted In 1, RCS needs iOS 18 and a supporting carrier; in 2, some businesses send order alerts and updates through RCS.

Frequently asked questions

What is iMessage marketing?

iMessage marketing is a brand sending messages to customers in Apple's Messages app as iMessages, in blue bubbles: cart reminders, order updates, product launches, offers, and replies to customer questions. It reaches customers on Apple devices with iMessage turned on.

What is iMessage for business?

It covers the ways a company can message customers in the Messages app. Apple runs Apple Messages for Business, a customer service channel set up through Apple-approved providers. Third-party apps let a store send iMessages from its own data, starting the conversation itself, for example with an abandoned cart reminder. iMessage is coming soon to Kanal.

Why do some business texts appear green on iPhone?

Apple Support explains that iMessage appears in blue bubbles, while RCS, SMS and MMS messages appear in green bubbles. A text from a brand sent by SMS or RCS is therefore green on an iPhone, even if the customer has iMessage turned on.

Do I need consent for iMessage marketing?

Treat marketing iMessages like marketing texts. In the US, carriers' messaging principles say messages should be sent only after the consumer has opted in, and the FCC rule lets consumers revoke consent by replying stop, cancel or unsubscribe, among other words. Record each opt-in.

Does Kanal send iMessages?

Soon. iMessage is coming to Kanal: a Shopify store will send the first iMessage, such as an abandoned cart reminder, and run the same automations as on WhatsApp: post-purchase offers, review requests, back-in-stock alerts, win-back messages, campaigns and an AI agent. In the meantime, Kanal reaches these customers on WhatsApp, SMS and RCS from the same app.
